Patient Zero by Jonathan Maberry

Title : Patient Zero: A Joe Ledger Novel
Author : Jonathan Maberry

Joe Ledger is a former soldier turned Cop turned Special Agent. He is put into a super secret government agency that reports directly to the president.
The special ops team has one and only one agenda : Eliminate a terrorist group that is bent on releasing a deadly epidemic on the world, in the name of God; an epidemic that will turn every living human being into the walking dead.

If I had to prepare an elevator speech about Patient Zero, I would just say that it is 400 pages of pure awesomeness.
It is literally impossible to put down this book once you start reading. It is action sequence after action sequence, enough to give you an adrenaline high for the rest of the day.

There is enough stuff in here to satisfy any action whore : Shootouts, face-eating zombies, twists, surprises, life or death situations, lots of gore, and even a great climax. Did I mention the POV shifts from 1st person to 3rd person and back?

I know I sound like a pathetic fanboy, but that is because this book made me one. Don't take my word for it, read some more reviews and try the book yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Day by Day Armageddon : J.L. Bourne

Title : Day by Day Armageddon
Author : J. L. Bourne

If you are a sucker for military fiction you will find Day by Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne unputdownable (is that even a word?)
The story progresses in first-person mode, in the form of journal entries by a naval officer who takes a new year resolution to document his mundane life. Little does he know that the tasteless journal entries would soon turn into a horrifying account of a struggle for survival in a madness ridden world.

This perspective gives the book a very up and personal touch and a lot of room for surprises and suspense. And yes, the book does leave you with the hair at the back of your neck standing up many an instance.
What impressed me most was that rather than getting all emotional and touchy-feely, the author focuses on the survivalist side of the story. The fact that the author used to be a soldier himself really shines through in the writing. Life and death situations are encountered and survived with the use of brain and brawn. It is fascinating to read how the narrator figures how to solve situations as they arise, using survival tactics and sometimes, pure common sense.
Take out your jotter and take notes as you read, because if we do get hit by a zombie apocalypse, these notes could become handy.

The book is comprised of three parts, 'Day by Day Armageddon' and 'Day by Day Armageddon : Beyond Exile'. The Third part, aptly titled 'If you can read this' is from the point of view of a zombie, a rather tough one that the soldier has to put down along the way. It is a refreshing change of perspective, well-executed, a bit sad and bleak, but I am sure you will love it.

Highly recommended for fans of Zombie Lit (who isn't), Apocalyptic fiction and military buffs.

Interesting footnote : DBDA started as a smalltime online journal maintained by Bourne, but soon it gained popularity and a mass following that he decided to get it self-published in 2004.

'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' by Carrie Ryan

Titile : The Forest of Hands and Teeth
Author : Carrie Ryan

I like to consider 'The Forest of Hands and Teeth' as a crossover work, because it is clean enough for a young reader, but at the same time, there is plenty of action and grittiness for an adult reader. It achieves the best of both worlds.

The reason I picked up the book was the title 'The Forest of Hands and teeth', which I thought was pretty catchy. It summons images of fantasy and magic worlds the same way a mention of Zelda or Final Fantasy would. Thankfully, the author Carrie Ryan does justice to the title with an equally magical writing.

The story is about a group of villagers who live in a small village in the middle of a forest, the forest of hands and teeth. The forest is breeding ground for the undead, and the villagers are protected from their undead neighbours by a fence that surronds the whole village. The fence is guarded by the Guardians, and the village is run by The Sisterhood, who enforce the rules and dictates the way of life within the village.
The world-building is complex and intriguing, and I will elaborate no more for the sake of sparing spoilers.

The main character is a little girl named Mary. She is what people would call a problem child, always out causing trouble. She is unsatisfied with the stupid rules that everyone else seems to be content with. She dreams of a life outside the fences, and hopes to visit the ocean someday. She might come across as tough and a bit selfish to some of you but you know what, I totally approve. I like my heroines to kick some serious ass!

One of the things you will find makes this book unique in the zombie genre is  that there is romance. In fact, there is more than just romance; there is a full blown Love Triangle! But Carrie Ryan totally pulls it off, unlike some *cough* vampire *cough* books.

The forest of hands and teeth is a series and four books have been released so far, with two of them being companion books, and book Three happens to be my favorite.
Which one was yours? Feel free to share in the comments.

'World War Z : An Oral History of the Zombie War' by Max Brooks

Title : World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
Author : Max Brooks

If there is a book that must be in every Zombie aficionado's library, it is World War : An Oral History of the Zombie War.

Max Brooks really nailed it with this awe-inspiring work, after the success of his equally brilliant 2003 masterpiece, the Zombie Survival Guide.

The World has fallen into an apocalyptic war against the Zombies (Hence the title, 'World War Z') and the narrator embarks on a journey interviewing people from different parts of the world affected by the Zombie apocalypse.
This gives the story a personal element rather than the frantic action for immediate survival and the resulting rushed feel that is prevalent in zombie literature.
There is no epic storyline here, just a collection of small stories that paint a much larger picture with cultural and political implications. A true flesh and blood account about real people and real emotions.

WWZ is a brilliant and intriguing historical account, complete with accompanying footnotes. Rather than the bland, historical lecture I was expecting from the book, what I received was 342 pages of pure awesomeness.

And did I mention WWZ is soon to be made into a motion picture? Fingers crossed for that one.

Recommended for all fans of Zombie Literature.

Books about Zombies : The History of Zombies

Wikipedia defines a Zombie as "an animated corpse resurrected by mystical means, such as witchcraft."
Zombies have been in our existence since the early 19th century, but it is only lately that they have attained such hype and mass following.

The modern zombie was inspired heavily from the 1968 George Romero film, "Night of the Living Dead", and since then has undergone many patches over the years. I mean, Zombies are the height of fashion in halloween parties nowadays, right?

So, what is the madness behind creating a website entirely dedicated to this undead scum, you might wonder. Think again, zombies are no mere mortals. Look around you, zombies are influencing every aspect of our lives as we speak.
Even in popular media you can find the zombie plague: Movies (Zombieland, I am legend, 28 days later, Shaun of the Dead...), Video Games (Resident evil, House of the Dead, Plants Vs Zombies,..), Music (Rob Zombie, 'nuff said), and yeah, Books. The list goes on and on.

And the importance of Zombies has become even more pronounced with the imminent Zombie Apocalypse. Many are of the belief that the end of the world will be brought about by a zombie apocalypse.

Will it be? Let's wait and find out.

In the meantime, grab yourself a copy of Zombie Survival Guide and just chillax.

In this blog you will find the best zombie literature out there, listed, compared, and reviewed. This is not for the weak-hearted. The following pages are laden with blood and gore and zombies crossing the road.
Trust me, it's gonna be real horrorshow, my droogies!
