Day by Day Armageddon : J.L. Bourne

Title : Day by Day Armageddon
Author : J. L. Bourne

If you are a sucker for military fiction you will find Day by Day Armageddon by J. L. Bourne unputdownable (is that even a word?)
The story progresses in first-person mode, in the form of journal entries by a naval officer who takes a new year resolution to document his mundane life. Little does he know that the tasteless journal entries would soon turn into a horrifying account of a struggle for survival in a madness ridden world.

This perspective gives the book a very up and personal touch and a lot of room for surprises and suspense. And yes, the book does leave you with the hair at the back of your neck standing up many an instance.
What impressed me most was that rather than getting all emotional and touchy-feely, the author focuses on the survivalist side of the story. The fact that the author used to be a soldier himself really shines through in the writing. Life and death situations are encountered and survived with the use of brain and brawn. It is fascinating to read how the narrator figures how to solve situations as they arise, using survival tactics and sometimes, pure common sense.
Take out your jotter and take notes as you read, because if we do get hit by a zombie apocalypse, these notes could become handy.

The book is comprised of three parts, 'Day by Day Armageddon' and 'Day by Day Armageddon : Beyond Exile'. The Third part, aptly titled 'If you can read this' is from the point of view of a zombie, a rather tough one that the soldier has to put down along the way. It is a refreshing change of perspective, well-executed, a bit sad and bleak, but I am sure you will love it.

Highly recommended for fans of Zombie Lit (who isn't), Apocalyptic fiction and military buffs.

Interesting footnote : DBDA started as a smalltime online journal maintained by Bourne, but soon it gained popularity and a mass following that he decided to get it self-published in 2004.
